Fox News, May 28, 2009 - Kansas Girl Spells 'Laodicean' to Win National Spelling Bee

Cool and collected, Kavya Shivashankar wrote out every word on her palm and always ended with a smile. The 13-year-old Kansas girl saved the biggest smile for last, when she rattled off the letters to "Laodicean" to become the nation's spelling champion.

TSTL COMMENT: "Ministers who are preaching present truth should not neglect the solemn message to the Laodiceans. The testimony of the True Witness is not a smooth message. The Lord does not say to them, 'You are about right; you have borne chastisement and reproof that you never deserved; you have been unnecessarily discouraged by severity; you are not guilty of the wrongs and sins for which you have been reproved.' The True Witness declares that when you suppose you are really in a good condition of prosperity, you are in need of everything. . . . Because Christ bears this rebuking testimony, shall we suppose that he is destitute of tender love to his people?--O, no! He who died to redeem man from death, loves with a divine love, and those whom he loves he rebukes. 'As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten.'" [REV. 3:19.] {Gospel Workers, page 87}

Is God trying to tell us something here? It is true people stretch to see signs from God, but is this a stretch? First, how often does one see such words from the Bible in a secular spelling contest? They are there, but not frequently. Second, was the winning word just any word along the series of words to spell correctly? No. It was the last and winning word. It would have been different if it was someone else's word to spell or if it was a word she spelled earlier in the contest. Third, there is more talk among people about this contest as opposed to prior ones.

In short, we do not believe in coincidences. No, we are not predicting Jesus is coming back this year or next. That is not what we gleamed from this being in the news. What we are saying is that God will use every means to get our attention, including the subtle means of a spelling contest. The time is approaching and fast. Rapid events are unfolding under the new administration, and the United States is being backed into a financial corner. Pressure is bearing down for major intrusion and losing freedoms. Yet all of this and we are asleep or lukewarm to the idea of living in the last days.

Wake up, wake up! That is what the winning word means. The church's probation draws nigh. Those who are faithful to Him and are actively winning souls shall move on through this period as one of the 144,000 into the saving of the multitudes (Revelation 7:4-9). Don't you want to be part of the 144,000?
