What is our purpose?
As “Thus Saith the Lord” Ministries continues to evaluate its purpose, our clear position keeps surfacing. We appear to be a voice against those in the physical church that continue to compromise step by step, and we are alerting all who will listen, ministers alike, to not follow. On the other side, we have so many that are fed up with all the blatant acts of the physical church and not so blatant acts that they are compelled to leave, and so we are here to encourage and strengthen them not to make that move.
We used the word physical church only “for they [are] not all Israel, which are of Israel” (Romans 9:6). Just because one is a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church does not make them a member of the church of heaven. In fact, it is more important to be part of the spiritual church than the physical, though God would have us be members of both, as we shall see.
We hear strong voices on both sides. There are many, many voices that see us as too critical of the church and that should be the case because those that compromise far exceed those that are against the compromises. They even disguise themselves as saying there are problems, but accuse us and others alike as trying to pull the church apart. It is their refusal to stand and say, “No further” to Satan that has gotten us into this mess.
Then we hear voices from those that say, “I’m just going to stay home and read my Bible until Jesus comes.” Of course that is not right for “Ye [are] my witnesses, saith the LORD, and my servant whom I have chosen” (Isaiah 43:10). We even hear voices of those from several states that have left to be part of a “purer” church and invite us out as well.
We find ourselves called to “weep between the porch and the altar” (Joel 2:17). According to 1 Kings 7:6, there was “made a porch of pillars.” And 1 Kings 7:7 says, “Then he made a porch for the throne where he might judge.” And we ought to know what the pillars represent — “the pillar and ground of the truth” (1 Timothy 3:15). And Exodus 20:24 says, “An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offerings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee.”
So we have the truth in which God judges His people, of which so many resist or excuse away and we have sacrifice pointing to the Lamb of God, whose blood blots out and forgives sin.
Answering “why”
Why do we believe we are between the porch and the altar? Why do we think we are called to be between these two groups? Why do we believe our purpose is to encourage God’s people not to be fed up and leave? Because the compromisers have taken the sacrifice of Jesus too far and turned it into cheap grace, however, there are also those motivated to “worship the Father in spirit and in truth” (John 4:23) and so they gather themselves together to the exclusion of others based upon strict adherence to the truth. Not that strict adherence is wrong, but the leading out into another body and treating those that remain as being in a church that is no different than the Catholic Church is the problem, for given time, creeping compromise will surely enter therein also.
In short, we have those that are in and out of the church that are so concerned for the truth that they almost lose sight of the full meaning of the sacrifice. And then we have so many on the other side that claim the sacrifice so strongly that they almost completely forget that we were established upon the pillar of truth.
Now up to this point is not the main purpose of this month’s newsletter. So why the preface? Because we want you to know the background for what we are going to share with you this month and we do not want you to think we are month after month randomly living in Isaiah 58:1, although nothing is wrong since all of us are called to fulfill it. “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.”
Establish Old Ground
Now before we are able to really get to the heart of the message, we need to establish old ground, especially for our new readers. If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to discuss this further before jumping to conclusions.
As stated before, we sincerely believe that the church, meaning the Seventh-day Adventist Church as explicitly is stated in Manuscript Release, vol. 1, pages 300-303, is not Babylon. We do believe Babylonian ideas have come into the church, which are quite numerous.
We also believe that there are many amongst us that are Egyptians in disguise, but like the march to the Promised Land, all remained physically as one group. These are the people who lust after their old worldly lives. Like Revelation 2:9 states, there are only two churches in the world. One being the “the synagogue of Satan” and the other in Revelation 12:17, “which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Physically, we are all together (tares and wheat ). Spiritually we are of either church. And these two churches exist spiritually in every denomination for where do you think all those people are going to come from in the last days that will come into God’s church, the complete truth? They are not the ones who are compromisers in their own denominations. The people to come out at the cry of “Come out of her, my people” (Revelation 18:4) are going to be those who today are having problems accepting compromises in their own denominations.
So again, we may appear to the Egyptians of the church as attackers when we are just trying to wake them up to the fact that “The church may appear as about to fall” {LDE 180.5}. That is what is happening right now. The rest of the prophecy is after Sunday Law. “But it does not fall. It remains, while the sinners in Zion will be sifted out.” Did you get that—those “which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ” (Revelation 12:17) remain while those of “the synagogue of Satan” are sifted out.
Further, we believe “in the book Living Temple there is presented the alpha of deadly heresies. The omega will follow, and will be received by those who are not willing to heed the warning God has given” {Selected Messages, Book 1, page 200}. This is not some future event that happens the day before Jesus arrives. We believe we are so close to the second coming, for the many fulfilled prophecies of the 1980’s, 1990’s, and currently. Therefore, we believe we are in the midst of the heresies called Omega, and like the Alpha in her day, there was never a call to come out and be a separate, physical organization.
What does history reveal?
Adam and Eve represented the first church. The church was at one point completely sinful. God did not create another couple. So despite the appearance that Satan was in complete control, he was not.
Adam, Eve, Cain, and Abel then made up the church. At that point, sin had been expelled, however, a spy for Satan revealed himself. Note that the sinner of Zion ended up being sifted out in the form of Cain. Unfortunately it cost the life of Abel.
All the people of the world at the time of the flood represented the next church example. Now this is a difficult one because Noah went off and built his own boat. It would imply that this is an example of separation, a calling out of the old physical church into a new physical church. But after closer examination, just as the wheat and the tares are to grow until the end, which for the church is the close of probation, so it is an example here. Noah was among the antediluvians right up until the close of probation, which was the seven days being shut up in the ark (Genesis 7:16). No one was to live in the ark before the close of probation. The call was made to be ready on that day to enter in. In other words, there was not to be a physical separation during those one hundred and twenty years, just on the day when probation closed were they to enter as did Noah and his family. So the same shall happen at the end of time. Right up to the close of probation for the church of which closes before the rest of the world, God’s people are to be among the people in apostasy reaching out to any that are willing. It may be that none shall prepare to enter into the boat on that day, but nonetheless, we must continue to work with what we have.
Next on the scene is Abraham. Now one may argue that we had church separation when Abram left Ur. If that is so, keep in mind it was through prophesy. For something major as a great calling out, it is going to be with a prophet. Every major movement of God is by the hand of a prophet, if it be of God. But instead we see it as the church of Israel just now beginning with Abram being called out of paganism, like Moses with the Israelites, like Martin Luther with the reformation, and like Ellen White with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. But let us examine this new church.
Abraham and Sarah lied (Genesis 20:2). This is after the name change from Abram and Sarai establishing the church. We have a corrupt church, but God does not find another couple.
Then we move to the next church period. Isaac and Rebekah also lied (Genesis 26:9). Again, God did not pick another couple to establish His church, because He is longsuffering.
Then there is Jacob and Esau. One may say that there was a separation. Actually, this is an example of when man moves and it is not God ordained. Jacob was not called to separate himself from Esau. And all the events leading up to the separation were not God ordained. For the series of acts moved upon by man’s thinking was not rewarded. Ending up having to work twice as long for the wife he wanted and leaving his father-in-law on the terms he did and then having to face Esau were not easy tasks. So we disagree that this would serve as an example of separation.
Then we see what the corrupt church can do to preachers giving the straight testimony. Joseph is thrown out of the church with the majority who were on the board being corrupt. But notice Joseph never called the brothers Babylon and he was eventually reunited with them.
With the physical church now established as the Israelites, Moses lead them through various experiences to purify them. Despite all the wonders of God, the church (Israelites) rejected the health reform, the Spirit of Prophecy, accepting the Word as it appears, and much more. You could say that the church was in great apostasy. And despite God being willing to gather another group of people, Moses did not separate himself but wept between the porch and the altar. Not just once but on several occasions. And if there were ever a time for a church split, this was it. God himself wanted to start a new group, several times. And in some situations, it was serious apostasy. There was a different form of worship, treating the Sabbath lightly, blatant disregard for God’s standards, and much more. The leadership was pliant at several points letting anything go. They even had a great leader going forth with the Alpha apostasy (Korah) as we have had with Dr. Kellogg. The Omega was even worse at Moab just as the Omega will hit us or is hitting us blindingly right now. But despite all that, even Joshua and Caleb never left the people who were Egyptian in heart, just as today, there are many, many Egyptians (desiring/living the old worldly life) amongst us.
And then these words of Ellen White on the subject are very direct. “Those who have seen the truth and felt its importance, and have had an experience in the things of God, are to teach sound doctrine to their children. They should make them acquainted with the great pillars of our faith, the reasons why we are Seventh-day Adventists--why we are called, as were the children of Israel, to be a peculiar people, a holy nation, separate and distinct from all other people on the face of the earth” {Testimonies for the Church, Volume Five, page 330}. She calls the Seventh-day Adventists Israel. That means all non-Seventh-day Adventists are pagans. The significant point is that just as Israel continued together right up to the first coming, so we are to do so right up until the events of the second coming. Just as Israel was to be a separate and peculiar people, so are we, but just as the majority were not, we too in majority are not. Be a Joshua or Caleb and stick with the group despite the calf worshipping, sex crazed, and complainers against God’s standards.
Next, we have compromising or duped Joshua who made an unlawful agreement (Joshua 9). Those that knew he was wrong did not leave to start their own country.
Then we have a list of righteous people among the larger group in apostasy throughout the book of Judges who rose up through the calling of God bringing us to the Kings.
When King Saul ruled and even when David was anointed to be the next king, David did not pull the righteous out of Saul’s kingdom. He home churched.
Under David, the righteous did not form a new country when it became public of the whoredom and murder conducted by the king.
And Solomon lead Israel into idolatry, which existed until the time of Jesus in the form of statues, but no mention of another coming out.
And then there was none worse, in our opinion, than King Ahab. He slaughtered the prophets, blatantly converted over to the world, and rejected the Word of God. Yet, the messengers that did survive to prophesy like Elijah did not have a message to call people to form another organization. Israel saw its darkest days during this period by joining to the harlot much like some accuse the church today of doing. The Seventh-day Adventist Church’s activities have been questionable, including attending ecumenical meetings in the name of observation.
And yes, there was a separation and even a new organization formed. We cannot forget the northern and southern kingdoms. But once again we have an example of man moving and not God and look what mess that created. Again, to justify that this is an example of forming a purer church, we beg to differ.
And who could forget in fast forward motion Babylon. Though the church of Israel was not Babylon, it sure was conquered by it. The synagogues were broken down, much like our spiritually broken down churches of today turning to Babylonian ways. The Seventh-day Adventist Church may not be Babylon, but it sure has adopted many techniques from Babylon. What matters though is that this is the church where the truth was deposited. It may take a young leader (like king Josiah) to uncover the buried truth, but nonetheless, this is the church where it has been deposited. And while captive in Babylon, Daniel never excluded himself, renounced his membership, or plotted to conduct a calling out to form a new physical organization. In fact, his prayer declares himself to be included in the apostate ways of the church.
And as we run out of time to give the countless references of all the apostate times and easy opportunities to have God call out to form a separate organization and yet did not, we must come to the period of Jesus. During His time, we find groups of unofficial home churches popping up. John the Baptist did not study in the church schools, which were teaching the wrong theology. We just received a copy of an e-mail from Pastor David Asscherick pleading that La Sierra University, a Seventh-day Adventist school, cease from teaching evolution. That is wrong theology. And that is but the tip of wrong teaching happening throughout our school system. Jesus Himself did not follow the normal channels. Yet despite the independent methods of these and others, we never see Jesus or John the Baptist calling for a separate organization. Even the apostles are found in a type of home church. We do not see Jesus gathering His disciples from the synagogue. One may argue that Jesus started the Christian church, when in fact He simply attempted to correct the heresies in the church and it was the vast majority of the church that rejected the pillars of truth that were to have always existed. Ellen White makes comments on how the first advent and the second advent will parallel in events such as Manuscript Releases, Volume Thirteen, page 396 and The Southern Watchman, April 4, 1905.
Those that point to the Christian church as a calling out are missing the point that the events leading up to the first coming are set as an example for the second. Just as God started with Adam and Eve with a God directed pathway and it was not until Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt that it become a physical church (nation), so the apostles were guided by God in His pathway and it was not until Ellen White and the pioneers that formed the Seventh-day Adventist Church did it become a nation (church).
So at the very least, we hope we have established in your mind that God’s people are to endure the apostasy. Unfortunately we have not seen the worst yet. Wait until the following prophecy is fulfilled:
As the storm approaches, a large class who have professed faith in the third angel's message, but have not been sanctified through obedience to the truth, abandon their position, and join the ranks of the opposition. By uniting with the world and partaking of its spirit, they have come to view matters in nearly the same light; and when the test is brought, they are prepared to choose the easy, popular side. Men of talent and pleasing address, who once rejoiced in the truth, employ their powers to deceive and mislead souls. They become the most bitter enemies of their former brethren. {The Faith I Live By, page 336}
Rwanda was a sample of the future. Seventh-day Adventist leaders during that countries crisis handed over many of God’s people to be slaughtered when those members sought safety in the church.
In summary, Romans 9:27 “Esaias also crieth concerning Israel, Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, a remnant shall be saved.”
Modern day Israel identified by keeping the commandments and having the testimony of Jesus Christ still will only have a remnant saved. It has been true throughout history. Why should any expect by human hands to create a more “pure” environment when all that man creates, even when claimed to be led by the Holy Spirit, has always become corrupted.
But we are called to be separate!
“Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord” (2 Corinthians 6:17). Those are pretty strong words. Is this a physical separation?
Jesus is our example. Hebrews 7:26 says, “For such an high priest became us, [who is] holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and made higher than the heavens.” Jesus was separate spiritually from sinners, but He made physical contact with them. Therefore, to physically leave the apostate group is to physically separate of which Jesus did not.
Further, Jesus' action of staying among His people, Israel, right up until the end shows the compassion He had for what little influence He had. You may be taken back by this statement of “little influence.”
After all that preaching throughout the millions of Jews, gathered together after the resurrection, the Bible says, “the number of names together were about an hundred and twenty” (Acts 1:15).
Likewise, if we truly love mankind, if we truly love the people where the truth was once deposited and still exists, despite the dust pile on top, we too shall stay among the people. We too shall not be surprised that there are only a few people. We too will not be surprised that we too have little or no influence.
But just before it is over, if just one sinner, like the thief on the cross, turns and says, “I know you were sent of God”, it will be worth it.
Yes we ought to be separate. Even if mocked for choosing a Vegetarian diet, separate yourself by not eating the food you chose not to eat. Even if someone in the church politely invites you to go see a movie, but you chose to cease from being exposed to such, separate yourself by declining. Even if someone leads out in Sabbath school and teaches the wrong content, do as Jesus did at twelve years of age and ask questions, which catches them in their own words. Even if someone invites you to a birthday party, graduation, or other secular event over the Sabbath, separate yourself by declining.
And there is nothing wrong with truly telling people why you are separating yourself. Then you are preaching the gospel even in the church.
Do you not think Jesus wanted a peaceful fellowship on the Sabbath? He spent more Sabbaths arguing.
So if you feel like all you do is argue at church, feel like you are getting nothing out of church but error, feel like your influence has seen its day long ago, just remember the prophecy of the condition in the church just before the close of probation includes “Nothing would be allowed to stand in the way of the new movement.” {Selected Messages, book 1, page 204}
But what are you measuring? Are you measuring the fact that you are no longer allowed to teach Sabbath School? Are you measuring the fact that you are no longer asked to speak during the sermon time? Are you measuring the fact that you are no longer voted to be on the board? Are you measuring the fact that no one lets you participate in class?
Just remember the prophecy begins with “The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization.” Now that means more members in the church are on the enemy's .
How many? “There is not one in one hundred who understands for himself the Bible truth on this subject that is so necessary to our present and eternal welfare.” {SM, book 1, page 359} That is ninety-nine out of one hundred are enlisted in the church to work for Satan, many without knowing. So you have been placed in an unexpected but important role. You are like the twelve spies, except you are just one.
Your mission in the church is not to take control. You are not even to fight against groups of people or expect much success if any. You and I are to look hard for the soul that may be attending your church that sees things as you see them or at least is open to that way and connect, encourage, and by all means prevent them from being disgusted and slip away to the world, to a life as a hermit, or whatever. You and I are also called to slow the enemy’s machine down by getting in the way, even if that means getting run over.
It may be that the destroyers are already training under the hand of Satan and only wait the departure of a few more standard-bearers to take their places, and with the voice of the false prophet cry, Peace, peace," when the Lord hath not spoken peace. {T5, page 77}. Who do you think rejoices when standard bearers leave His church, certainly not God?
How about a little patience?
Alright, a lot of patience. Things are really bad. But history reveals that we are to endure. History reveals we are to sacrifice our lives. History reveals that God is in control. History reveals that God shall act in His time and those that have taken the reigns into their own hands have always gotten themselves into trouble.
King Saul did it over and over again. Joshua acted without consulting God. Moses even took matters into his own hands twice (murdering an Egyptian and striking the rock).
Let God send a prophet to lead us out or let Him clean up the mess. He will do one of those two things. We know which one He will do. The sinners in Zion will be sifted out, you are not being called out. Pray, pray, pray and agitate, agitate, agitate {Gospel Workers, page 299}.
